A 75-minute, $125 working session designed to understand your voice, clarify your goals, and recommend the right lesson plan and faculty placement.

What Is the Initial Vocal Assessment?
The Initial Vocal Assessment is required before enrolling in regular VOCES lessons. It is not an audition that you must pass, and you do not need to arrive with polished repertoire or previous training.
During the session, Dr. José Miguel Santelices learns about your vocal history, musical experience, concerns, interests, and goals. You will be guided through selected exercises and vocal tasks so he can observe how your voice responds and identify useful priorities for future study.

What the Assessment Includes
• A conversation about vocal history, experience, interests, and goals
• Guided vocal exercises selected for the individual singer
• Observation of range, coordination, registration, resonance, pitch, and response
• Immediate feedback and practical recommendations
• Discussion of the most appropriate monthly lesson plan
• A faculty placement recommendation based on needs, goals, schedule, and availability
• Time to ask questions about VOCES, lessons, and next steps

What Happens After the Assessment?
• VOCES reviews the student's goals, vocal needs, and schedule.
• You receive a recommended faculty member and lesson plan.
• The team confirms whether an appropriate recurring lesson time is available.
• You decide whether you would like to enroll in regular monthly lessons.
You are not required to enroll in monthly lessons after the assessment. We ask for your availability in advance so that, if you decide to join VOCES, we can determine whether an appropriate recurring lesson time is available.

You may share a song if you have one available, but previous repertoire is not required unless the VOCES team gives you specific preparation instructions when confirming the appointment.

No. The Initial Vocal Assessment is an educational and musical session. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. If a health concern is suspected, you may be encouraged to consult an appropriate licensed medical professional.

Every Initial Vocal Assessment is conducted by Dr. José Miguel Santelices, founder and director of VOCES Academy of the Arts.

Not necessarily. Dr. Santelices conducts assessments and recommends placement across the VOCES faculty. His private studio is currently full and available by waitlist at a separate rate.

No. Placement depends on the student's needs, schedule, and current faculty availability. The team will explain available options after the assessment.

Yes. Initial Vocal Assessments may be available online for students who live outside the area or prefer a remote format.
